Wednesday March 4 – S.G. Goodman will release her debut record, Old Time Feeling, on Verve Forecast on May 29. Produced by Grammy-nominated solo artist and member of My Morning Jacket, Jim James, Old Time Feeling is a compelling introduction that showcases S.G.’s otherworldly voice, which soars above a timeless sonic blend of gritty rock ‘n’ roll guitars, sultry bottomland grooves and plaintive folk balladry.

When she opens her mouth to sing, S.G. possesses the power to stop you in your tracks like a bite from the cottonmouth snakes that swim in the slough water of her Western Kentucky homeland. James, who discovered S.G after she was introduced by a mutual friend via email, puts it best, when he states simply, “When I first heard her, I was spellbound.” On working with James, S.G stated, “it was amazing working with someone whose main goal was for me to be myself.”
S.G. Goodman was raised in Western Kentucky on the Mississippi River Delta, in a strict church going family of row crop farmers. She went from singing in church three times a week to becoming a prominent member of the Murray, KY DIY scene and an impassioned voice in the political and social movements she supported. Her insights into the plight of the rural working class is a subject which she explores on her intense debut song and its accompanying video, “The Way I Talk.”
Discussing the song which premiered today on The Fader, S.G stated, “The song is inspired by the plight of the farming community in Kentucky where I grew up, where big business and the laws that protect them have vast control over my community. It is a scary thing calling into question the very thing that put food on my table and is putting food on my niece’s table (she plays the little girl in the video). Isn’t that the case for every person working a factory line who is afraid to unionize? Or a fast food employee afraid to take sick leave to care for her kid? We are all expected to be thankful, not question, and shut our mouths.“
As a gay woman who grew up in one of the most isolated parts of Kentucky, S.G. has the unique perspective of feeling like “the insider who is also the outsider“. Filled with biblical references and southern imagery like Red Birds, Cypress knees and coal miner’s sons, Old Time Feeling, is a complicated ode to the south filtered through her lived experience of heartache, protest, estrangement and reconciliation.
Old Time Feeling covers a lot of challenging ground. S.G. debunks rural stereotypes, while exploring mental health and living with OCD, as well as her sexuality and the notion that you can still love your family and community even though you might disagree with them.
Jim James believes S.G’s experiences could serve as a bridge for a divided country. “I think she could play an important role in the healing we need to see happen right now. She’s living proof that we can be whoever we want to be, no matter where we come from.”
Old Time Feeling was recorded over seven days at Louisville’s iconic La La Land Studio, chosen by S.G as it possessed three of her favorite things. “A creek, a big porch, and a kitchen“. SG cooked meals for the recording crew and her band – a family touch that is common place for a band featuring her life long friends, Matthew David Rowan and S. Knox Montgomery, who helped create the record, providing guitars, and drums respectively.
The album was mixed by S.G, James and Kevin Ratterman at Bo Koster’s studio in Los Angeles. The group then headed from LA to the deserts of Joshua Tree to celebrate the finalisation of the project. SG adds, “It was a trip. We let loose and then went to see Kentucky treasure, Murder By Death at Pappy & Harriets. Was the perfect way to celebrate all our hard work.”
S.G Goodman performs today at Rolling Stone Magazine’s Women Shaping The Future event at Hudson Yards alongside performances from Grace Potter, Overcoats and Diana Gordon. She will also open for John Moreland on his headline tour throughout March and April, as well as support for Nada Surf and Son Volt. She makes her debut at SXSW Festival, performing at St. David’s Historic Sanctuary on Wednesday, March 18. All dates below.
