Today, May Erlewine, the beloved Michigan singer-songwriter releases, “That’s My Home,” the second single from her upcoming album Second Sight, out November 1st, 2019. Featuring sincere, earnest writing steeped in the tradition of the folk-singer activist, Second Sight transmutes the pain, grief, and turmoil of these troubled times into an album of powerful, heartfelt songs. “That’s My Home” is a direct letter from Erlewine to the 45th president, pleading with him to consider the direction he has been driving this country. “One morning, I woke up and decided that I was not going to let my despair continue to drown out my voice,” Erlewine explains. “I sat down and wrote a letter to the 45th president and at that moment committed to using my voice throughout his time in office. The wounds of his words and actions would not go unnoticed in my life, in my heart, and in my music.”
The song is a plea for care, responsibility, respect, and mindfulness to return to the foundation of what we seek from our leaders – and ultimately what is as stake if we don’t set the bar higher. It serves as a rallying cry and call for responsibility. “That’s My Home,” and Erlewine’s recently released “Whole Again,” reflect the larger themes found throughout the album, which in many ways is a direct response to current events. “Whole Again,” was written as a poem by Erlewine while watching the testimony of Christine Blasey Ford during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, with “That’s My Home” documenting the grief and injustice inflicted on so many by the president with his hateful words and actions.
Recorded at the Barber Shop in Ann Arbor, MI, “That’s My Home” features special guests including Graham Parsons (The Go Rounds) on backing vocals and a stunning electric guitar solo from Theo Katzman (Vulfpeck). Tyler Duncan engineered the song and is also featured on piano. Michael Shimmim shares his creative drumming on the track, Dominic Davis is featured on the bass, Eric Kuhn on the rhythm guitar, and Brad Phillips showcasing the lush string arrangements. Joe Hettinga is featured on synths.
Erlewine is currently on tour in support of Second Sight, bringing her emotionally engaging live show, rooted in hard-wrought wisdom, joy and sorrow across the country, with shows coming up at the Moab Folk Festival, Massachusetts, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Colorado. Erlewine is joined at most shows along the tour by her band featuring Phil Barry, Eric Kuhn, Joe Hettinga, Max Lockwood, Faith Quashie, Julia Moffa, and Michael Shimmin, with select shows featuring Erlewine performing solo.
